At Poteau Primary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive educational environment where young learners thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our school serves approximately 440 students with the support of 45 certified staff members and 18 dedicated support staff. With an average class size of 17 students, we ensure personalized attention to help each child reach their full potential.

Academic Excellence

Outstanding academics are a top priority at Poteau Primary. We are proud to have received a B overall on our state report card. To achieve academic excellence, we employ a variety of teaching strategies and resources to maximize learning and address individual student needs. Our primary method of instruction focuses on hands-on and collaborative learning, ensuring that young students engage actively through experience and interaction rather than passive instruction.

Programs and Services

In addition to our comprehensive core curriculum, we offer several specialized programs to support our students:

• Developmental Delay 3 Year Old Program: Two half-day classes for students who qualify after their third birthday.

• Pre-Kindergarten: A full-day program with each classroom staffed by a certified teacher and a full-time aide.

• Intervention Classes: Targeted instruction for kindergarten and first-grade students who are not meeting reading benchmarks.

• Special Education Services: Support for students who qualify.

• English Learner (EL) Classes: Pullout instruction to help students develop English proficiency.

• After-School Tutoring: Available three days per week for students needing additional academic support.

• Pirate Quest After-School Program: Offered Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., providing homework assistance, an afternoon snack, and enriching activities led by certified teachers and support staff.

• Counseling Services: Guidance lessons, individual and group counseling provided by our school counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Social-emotional learning is also integrated into daily classroom instruction.

Student Enrichment

To ensure a well-rounded education, students participate in daily activity classes, including:

• Library

Additionally, we integrate technology into instruction with 1:1 Chromebooks for kindergarten and first-grade students, while pre-K students utilize iPads to enhance learning.

Nutrition Program

Our school nutrition program ensures that every child has access to healthy meals, offering a free hot breakfast and lunch daily.
